This class was fantastic because of how it looked at medicine from a non-intuitive perspective. Using evolutionary theory to examine human medical conditions is fascinating and has opened the doors for more approaches to developing cures and treatments. Dr. Bergstrom was very knowledgeable in the subject, teaching the class many times before in addition to already being involved with it in his research. Most interesting to me was how we could understand many ailments not as something going wrong, necessarily, but as a side effect of something going right (and thus evolution has selected for it despite its negative effects). For example, the same genes that cause Alzheimer's and dementia later in life have been correlated with higher mental function early in life. In some sense, humans have evolved to overclock their brains when it's really important, at the expense of it wearing out over time (note this a very simplified way of explaining it). I absolutely loved this class, and the information I learned is sure to help me in my future career.
