This was, by far, my most time-intensive course of the quarter (ironically, it was worth the fewest credits), but I certainly also learned the most from it. The labs were designed so that basic laboratory techniques (ie. recrystallization, reflux, TLC) were introduced early on, and then through practice, the later labs were able to compound these techniques so that fairly complicated procedures could be accomplished in a relatively short amount of time. Most of my lab experience to this point had focused on more biologically-focused techniques, so I greatly expanded my repertoire with new organic chemistry approaches. A lot of the data analysis focused on proton NMR spectroscopy, so my confidence interpreting these common spectra increased quite a bit as well. I am excited to take the second quarter of organic chemistry labs to see what I else I can add to my tool belt and how I can improve my lab practices.
